Navratri Day 5 – Skandamata

Navratri is the famous religious celebration in Bharat (India). It is the occasion celebrating the feminine aspects of energy, called navdurga. The nine forms of goddess or shakti is worshipped in this nine day festival. Moreover this hindu festival comes twice a year. Goddess Parvati or Durga manifested her into nine different forms of feminine energy. We all worship the Devi Durga with love, faith and devotion. She is the bestower of spiritual and material things, siddhis, powers, joy and much more. In india shaktism is the one of the culture where the navratri holds a special place.

Goddess of the Navratri day five : Skandamata स्कन्दमाता.

Skandamata is the fifth form of Goddess Durga and hence people in India worship her on the fifth day of navratri festival. Skandamata means the mother of skanda. Lord kartikeya is the skanda. So when Goddess Parvati became the mother of skanda, lord kartikeya, thereafter she is called skandamata. She is the one of the navdurga.

She rides on the lion with the lord kartikeya, known as skanda or murugun, in her lap holding by one of her hand. She is four-armed. She carries lotus in two of her hands, one hand is in abhaya mudra (boon-conferring gesture) and other carrying the skanda.

Governing Planet : Mercury (Buddh)

In astrology mercury is the significator of prince, childhood. It is also the planet for communication and intelligence. The mantra chanting of Devi Skandamata enhances the positive aspects of mercury and removes bad effects of mercury if one has in his horoscope.

Chakra Associated : Vishuddhi or Vishuddha, Throat Chakra, विशुद्धी or विशुद्ध

The sadhana and worship of devi Skandamata activates the Vishuddha chakra. This is the channel of expression and communication. The imbalance, if any can be rectified by the chanting of mantra of devi skandamata.

वन्दे वाञ्छित कामार्थे चन्द्रार्धकृतशेखराम्।
सिंहरूढ़ा चतुर्भुजा स्कन्दमाता यशस्विनीम्॥
धवलवर्णा विशुध्द चक्रस्थितों पञ्चम दुर्गा त्रिनेत्राम्।
अभय पद्म युग्म करां दक्षिण उरू पुत्रधराम् भजेम्॥
पटाम्बर परिधानां मृदुहास्या नानालङ्कार भूषिताम्।
मञ्जीर, हार, केयूर, किङ्किणि, रत्नकुण्डल धारिणीम्॥

जय तेरी हो स्कन्द माता। पांचवां नाम तुम्हारा आता॥

कई नामों से तुझे पुकारा। मुझे एक है तेरा सहारा॥
कही पहाड़ों पर है डेरा। कई शहरों में तेरा बसेरा॥
